Thanks Jay. In my research I came across the info about the soldier being kicked out, a Lieutenant Gotthold Frederick Enslin, another German. His court martial was presided over by none other than Aaron Burr. There is speculation that Washington’s light sentence of Enslin–he could have been imprisoned or executed–indicated Washington’s lenient attitude towards homosexuality. Von Steuben’s success and legacy in the military under Washington is a strong enough argument against DADT.

Nice blog David. According to Randy Shilts in his book Conduct Unbecoming, on the day von Steuben arrived in camp and started his training program for the continental army, a young soldier (whose name I don’t recall now) was kicked out of the same camp for being homosexual.

Thank you, Kathy. Baking is one of those family activities that is universal, and I love how it’s passed down the generations. “Wondering what else is coming” is an interesting thought, as I tend to think I have to make something happen instead of letting it happen. But fact is whatever goals are set, we have to let it happen anyway. I’ll let you know the next time the High Dive has a public performance.

Lovely, lovely post, Dave. So many connections, resonances for me. I had a similar moment last week as I found myself baking cookies (with my mother’s recipe) for my kid’s class halloween party. This is not a place I expected to be, yet here I am: a mother, baking, using my mother’s utensils and recipe. Makes me wonder what else is coming down the track.
